Caring Hearts Program: Making a Difference One Patient at a Time.

The most important day in any patient’s hospital stay is often going home. Due to various unforeseen circumstances, patients sometimes need extra support and kindness in navigating discharge challenges before leaving the hospital. We know that every day counts and a day less in hospital improves a patient’s experience.

Barriers to discharge can be varied including but not limited to transportation, clothing, household supplies, toiletries, access to meal/food vouchers, pharmaceutical supplies, or minor equipment.

It is, for this reason in 2019, the Caring Hearts Fund was born; an Auxiliary sponsored fund that assists when called upon (within the scope of our mandate) to help people safely leave the hospital avoiding potential barriers to a successful discharge or hospital readmission. In the grand scheme it might not take much to help another human get back on their feet but what is required is a village of people who are willing to help and the resources to be able to do so.

One such example occurred recently in which a patient experienced a lengthy stay at Peace Arch Hospital and required significant support and kindness in order re-establish their current living situation. It was a case that pulled at our heart strings and was without hesitation approved by the Board as a recipient of funds from the Caring Heart Fund.

This act of kindness, for which we received a heartfelt note of gratitude from the patient themself, serves as an important reminder of the profound impact of Caring Hearts. It's more than a program; it's a testament to the power of community, compassion, and collective action.

As one of many initiatives championed by our Auxiliary, Caring Hearts stands as a shining example of the difference we can make when we unite in the service of others. It's a call to action, inviting each of us to contribute to and be a part of something that not only changes lives but also enriches our own.
