Planned Giving

Planned Giving Programs, also called Legacy Giving, help donors make plans to leave money or assets to a non-profit at a future date, both during their lifetime and after death in their will.

A donor can make an ongoing impact in the lives of others and a legacy gift extends a lifetime of giving. Planning a gift in a Will can bring a sense of peace and joy knowing this gift has a positive impact on the well being of others in our community hospital.

We take pride in our humble beginnings and noble history. In 1948, when the Auxiliary was founded, ordinary people, did extraordinary things and achieved the remarkable goal of bringing a hospital to White Rock. While celebrating our 75th Anniversary, we want this incredible legacy to continue for the next 75 years, awakening the understanding of what the impact of Planned Giving can achieve for the Auxiliary.

Many Auxiliary members have years of dedicated time and service for the good of the hospital and our community. Many of our programs are personal to individual patients and residents as they enhance their care and comfort. All of us are touched by what we provide and so we may wish to consider leaving the Auxiliary a monetary gift so it’s legacy will continue after we are gone.

Gifting any portion of your assets, does not affect your current lifestyle in any way. The transfer of any assets only take place after your death. Tax benefits are significant. The Canadian government has created some of the best tax incentives in the world to encourage more giving to charity, especially from your estate. When you leave a legacy gift your estate receives a tax receipt for the full value of the gift which adds a tax rebate to your final return. This can help to maximize the value of your residual estate for you beneficiaries.

We recommend that you seek professional advice from a lawyer, notary public or financial advisor when contemplating making a Planned Gift.

We are so very grateful for the support we have received over all these years and thank you for your consideration of this program for the good of the Auxiliary and those in care.

In late 2018, we were notified that the Auxiliary was the beneficiary of one-half of Mimi Chan’s estate; sharing it with the BC Cancer Foundation. This is the largest bequest in the history of the Auxiliary and it has enabled us to make a $1.5 million dollar pledge to Peace Arch Hospital. This has enabled the construction of 5 new Operating Suites.

Mimi was born in Hong Kong in 1936 and graduated from Maryknoll School in 1959 in Hong Kong.

She was awarded a full scholarship to study music (major piano, minor organ) at Marymount College, New York. She completed a Master’s degree (organ) from Julliard School in New York and she once performed at Carnegie Hall. She returned to Hong Kong in 1967 and taught piano for 30 years.

Mimi retired to the South Surrey White Rock area after moving from Hong Kong in 1999. She became an Auxiliary member on Dec 20, 1999, and joined the Sunset Group. She was a volunteer and buyer in the Gift Shop working with past Coordinator Alice Traill. Her passion was music and her students. Her greatest gift was to play the piano for the residents in both residential care buildings and Oceanside for many years. She also paid for the maintenance of the piano located in Lou’s Place, in the basement of the Doc Hogg residential care building.

A commemorative plaque to honour Mimi’s generous gift to the Auxiliary will be placed in the new Peace Arch Hospital Foundation Lodge later this spring. The Foundation will host a Tea when the plaque is unveiled. Date and time to be announced at a later date.

She is survived by her beloved dog and companion Gigi.
